• หายใจเร็ว หายใจลำบาก หรือหายใจทางปาก
• มีไข้ อาเจียน หรือท้องเสียร่วมด้วย
• น้ำลายไหล หรือมีแผลในช่องปาก
• เป็นลูกแมวหรือแมวสูงอายุ ซึ่งอาการอาจเปลี่ยนเร็วกว่าแมวโตทั่วไป

A Sleepy Cat Who Eats Less and Sneezes May Not Just Have a Simple Cold

Many cat owners may not realize that a cat who is lethargic, eating less and sneezing could be dealing with more than an ordinary cold.

As the weather turns cooler, many of us see cats starting to sneeze and develop runny noses. Respiratory infections and feline panleukopenia (often called feline distemper) can spread more easily this time of year. Most cases are a common cat cold that improves with good care, but some look similar at first and need more attention. Here is how to tell what can be watched at home and what should be checked by a vet soon.

Signs you can watch at home

If your cat still acts like themselves, a short period of close observation is reasonable:

• Occasional sneezing
• Small amounts of clear eye or nose discharge
• Normal eating, drinking and litter box habits
• Still playful and responsive

Gently wipe the eyes and nose with a warm, clean damp cotton pad, keep your cat somewhere warm and draft-free, and separate them from other cats. Please never give human medication, as some are harmful to cats.

Signs to bring your cat in soon

Please come in without waiting if you notice:

• Clear lethargy, hiding or refusing to play
• Eating much less, or not eating for about a day, since prolonged fasting can affect a cat's liver
• Thick yellow-green discharge, or eyes squinting or stuck shut
• Fast or labored breathing, or breathing with an open mouth
• Fever, vomiting or diarrhea
• Drooling or mouth sores
• A kitten or senior cat, whose condition can change quickly

These signs can become serious if left untreated. Seeing a vet early lets us find the cause and start care in good time, and the chance of a good recovery is much higher when treatment starts early.

Why cooler weather deserves extra attention

Cooler, changeable weather can stress some cats and lower their resistance, so respiratory germs spread more easily, especially in multi-cat homes or with a newly adopted cat.

Cats with incomplete or overdue vaccinations deserve particular attention. The core cat vaccine helps reduce the severity of cat flu and panleukopenia. It does not prevent every case, but it helps your cat cope far better. If you can't remember the last vaccine date, check the vaccine book or message us and we'll help look it up. It's an easy thing to miss.
