(Canine Distemper)

3 Contagious Diseases in Dogs That Vaccines Can Help Prevent, and the First Signs to Watch For

There are three contagious diseases in dogs that vaccines can help prevent, and each has early signs worth knowing. Vets tend to stress this when the seasons change, because some infections spread easily, and puppies or dogs with incomplete vaccinations can become seriously ill. Many households may not have noticed that a booster has slipped past its due date. It happens to everyone. Here are three important diseases and the early signs that deserve a prompt check-up.

1. Parvovirus (Infectious Gut Inflammation)

Most common in puppies. The virus survives in the environment for a long time and spreads through other dogs or contaminated floors and objects.

First signs: Lethargy, loss of appetite and vomiting, followed by loose stools, sometimes with blood and an unusual smell.

Dogs lose fluids quickly, so please bring them in promptly. It can become severe without care, but the outlook is much better when treatment starts early.

2. Canine Distemper

This virus affects several body systems: breathing, digestion and the nervous system. Puppies without a full vaccine series are especially at risk.

First signs: Fever, low energy, sticky discharge from the eyes, thick nasal discharge, coughing and poor appetite. Later, some dogs show tremors or twitching, a sign to see a vet right away.

3. Leptospirosis

Caused by bacteria found in standing water and damp soil contaminated by carrier animals' urine. Our warm, humid climate, especially in the rainy season, helps the bacteria linger. It can also pass to people.

First signs: Fever, lethargy, muscle soreness, drinking more or urinating unusually, and sometimes vomiting or yellow gums and eyes.

4. Check Your Dog's Vaccine Book Today

Take a quick look at three things:

  • Has your puppy received every shot for their age?
  • When is the yearly booster of the combination vaccine due?
  • Has anything slipped past its due date?

If the book is lost or you are unsure, there is no need to feel bad. Bring your dog in and our vets will assess and set a new schedule. Vaccinating on time is a worthwhile investment in your dog's health and can reduce treatment costs over time.

Summary

All three diseases can be prevented with vaccines, and the early signs often look like simple tiredness or eating less, so they are easy to spot once you know.
