English version

"Rabid dogs always foam at the mouth" — is that true?

Many people believe a rabid dog always foams at the mouth. In reality, not always. Rabies in dogs and cats can look quite different from one pet to another, and some never show heavy drooling at all. If we only wait for that one sign, we may miss the changes that matter more. Let's separate myth from fact so you can watch your pet more accurately.

Foaming at the mouth doesn't happen in every case

The foaming image from movies is just one of several presentations. Some infected pets become aggressive, while others turn quiet, weak and withdrawn, which is easy to mistake for an ordinary illness.

Excess drooling can happen when throat muscles stop working normally and the pet can't swallow. But it isn't universal, and drooling has many other causes: something stuck in the throat, dental or mouth problems, or an irritating food. So the presence or absence of drool can't tell us whether a pet has rabies.

Behavior changes worth watching

Changes from your pet's normal self are the more reliable clue, in both dogs and cats:

  • A cuddly pet becomes irritable or snaps for no reason
  • A shy pet becomes unusually clingy, or a social pet hides in dark corners
  • Biting at objects that aren't food, or at the air
  • A changed bark or meow
  • Trouble swallowing, a weak jaw or hind legs, wobbly walking
  • Unusual lethargy and refusing food

These signs don't always mean rabies — pain or other illnesses can cause them too. But they are a good reason to see a vet soon, especially if your pet isn't vaccinated, is behind on boosters, or has met stray animals.

If you've been bitten or scratched

It happens to the best of us. Don't wait it out:

  1. Wash the wound with soap and clean running water for about 15 minutes
  2. Apply an antiseptic such as povidone-iodine
  3. See a doctor promptly for assessment and post-exposure vaccination, even if the wound looks small
  4. Keep an eye on the animal, and tell your vet about its vaccine history

Once symptoms of the disease begin, treatment is extremely difficult, which is why early care and prevention matter so much.

Vaccination is the best protection

The good news: rabies is preventable. Vaccinating puppies and kittens at the age your vet recommends, then keeping up regular boosters, is a worthwhile investment in your pet's health and protects your whole family. Even indoor-leaning cats can slip outside, and dogs on walks can meet other animals.

In short

Foaming at the mouth isn't a reliable test. Watch for behavior that has changed, and keep the vaccine record up to date. If you're unsure whether a symptom needs a check-up, or whether it's time for a booster, message our vet team on Messenger or LINE @dogcorner anytime.
